What Were the Best Cars of 2014?
With so many new cars being released last year, from hatchbacks to supercars, picking the best ones can seem like an impossible task. However, a few models rolled off the production line and excelled amongst their competitors, and this article will look back over the year and see which cars stood out.
Volkswagen Golf R
The Volkswagen Golf is sold worldwide in its millions; the perfect blend of agility, safety and comfort making it a hit with drivers. However, the Golf R does a little more than just add a letter to the name. With 296bhp, the Golf R boasts 140bhp more power than it’s regular namesake, coupled with some changes to the body kit to create a car that has the performance to back up its sporty looks.
The McLaren P1 isn’t your average car. It isn’t even your average supercar. It is, in fact, a hypercar. The numbers involved with this vehicle are staggering – 903bhp, an eye-watering top speed of 217mph and a price tag of £866,000 means this car is not for the faint hearted, or those on any kind of budget.
A car that combines futuristic styling with futuristic power, the BMW i8 is an electric car that is capable of serious speed. Its two electric motors produce 357bhp, enough to propel it from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds – incredible pace, particularly for an electric car. The plug in charge enables it to travel 22 miles at 75mph on entirely electric power, but even if you need to use the backup petrol engine, you’ll still get a fantastic 135mpg.
The Kia Soul is hugely popular in America, a country which has a well-known love for bulky, 4×4 vehicles, so the welcome it has received there is surely a sign of the quality of the car. An updated version of its predecessor, critics agree that the new Soul is a huge improvement on the previous one.
The UK’s first ever plug-in hybrid SUV eschews the traditional fuel-guzzling stereotypes that come with the majority of 4x4s we see on the road. The Outlander’s excellent running costs make it a fantastic alternative to those who want the performance of an SUV without having to fork out for large amounts of fuel.
