Signs that Your Car Has Suspension Problems

a mechanic checking a car's suspensionThe nature of suspension means that when it is working, you won’t even give it a second thought as your vehicle traverses bumps and uneven surfaces in the road. However, if your suspension develops a fault, it is often very noticeable as the aforementioned uneven surfaces cause your car to shudder and rattle.

Pulling to one side

If your car starts listing to one side while turning, this is a definite symptom of a suspension fault – this happens when your car is struggling to be stabilised against the natural forces that occur during a turn. While this may not be so noticeable during gentle turns, in serious cases it can increase the possibility of your car rolling over.

Dipping during braking

If you can feel your car ‘nose diving’ when you press the brakes, this is because the shock absorbers on your suspension are worn out or almost worn out. As well as being an uncomfortable movement, worn out shock absorbers can increase your stopping distance by up to 20%, putting you and other road users at risk.

The ‘Bounce Test’

A common way of checking if your suspension is in appropriate condition is to perform what is known as ‘the bounce test’. Push down on the front of your car with your whole body weight and ‘bounce’ the front a few times. If the car continues to bounce after you have finished pressing down, this is a sign that the suspension is wearing out and needs to be replaced.

Uneven tyre tread

While it is natural for your tyres to become worn over time, if the tread is being worn down unevenly, this could be a sign that your suspension is not holding your car in the stable manner that it should. The more that this uneven wear occurs, the less and less grip your tyres will have and this can have a serious effect on the way your car handles.

Rough or uncomfortable ride

This is the most common and perhaps the most easily noticeable symptom of poor suspension. If you suddenly start to feel every bump in the road, this could be because your suspension is in need of replacement. If your car is shaking around a lot during journeys, it might be time to visit a mechanic.
