Tyres for Driving in Snow and Ice
All motorists know the dreaded conditions that can come with the cold winter months. Roads become considerably more unstable, and as a result there is a higher probability of accidents, especially if you and your vehicle are not properly prepared. When it comes to tyres, there are a number of ways you can ensure that you have taken all necessary measures to ensure you and your vehicle can handle icy or snowy roads as safely as possible.
It is recommended that you have at least 3mm of tyre tread before traversing any winter roads. It goes without saying that the more tread your tyres have, the more stability and grip your vehicle will benefit from, and this is particularly important in winter.
If you are unfortunate enough to live in an area that is hit by significant snowfall, snow chains may be necessary. These are only needed for roads that have not been cleared and have been affected by a considerable amount of snow, and the chains must be removed if you are driving on cleared road.
There are also tyres available that are specifically designed for winter use. Winter tyres have a higher content of silica than normal tyres, which means they can withstand lower temperatures, which means they boast better grip in cold conditions.
As well as tyres playing an important role in your road safety when driving in snow and ice, there are a number of other steps that you can take to help avoid any issues this winter. Top up windscreen washer fluid before you leave, and make sure that whenever you leave your vehicle you ensure your wipers are in the park position. This removes the possibility of your wiper blades freezing to your windscreen.
Ensure that your battery is fully charged – you are certainly going to need your headlights, wipers and heating for your journey, and this puts a lot of extra strain on the battery. If you know you are going on a long journey in advance, ensure your battery is charged the night before so you don’t fall victim to a power failure in the middle of your journey.
